Students' interactions with peers are greatly reduced as online learners. They complete online classes alone, mostly asynchronously, and with limited peer interactions. Students in online programs can lack a sense of community and lead to a feeling of isolation.
While online programs offer some benefits to students such as Flexibility, Self-Paced Learning, and Lower Costs it presents new challenges. To do well students must have higher self-regulation, strong time management skills, and be extremely self-motivated.
According to the latest data, 35% of college students are taking at least one course online (NCES Fast Facts: Distance Learning). This trend has steadily risen over the past decade and will continue to rise as the world continues to be affected by Covid-19 along with advances in technology.
